The Yellowchair Performance Experience

Kiss Cum Kiss

Hugh was contacted by New York based theatre company Missfit Productions in early 2006, regarding Write Side of The Brain. This is an annual festival, held in this instance at the Baron's Court Theatre, which showcases new writing (poetry, song, prose, theatre). Two pieces per day for a week. Once the writers have seen their work performed, they audience feedback, which helps them develop it.

The piece Hugh worked on was one of only three plays in the 2006 festival. It was called KissCumKiss and had been written the previous year by Carl Palmer. Apparently, it was Carl who chose to work with Hugh, based on their respective contacts and on Hugh's work on The Source of All The Evil.

The original script Hugh was given can be seen HERE, but due to the size of the performing space, the size of the dressing room, and the forty minute maximum time restraint imposed on by the company the piece was edited down to just six characters:

Colin: JOE CRONIN
Fern: MALWINA SWORCZ
Vince: JOE LOMBARDELLI
Tracey: JENEVIEVE CHANG
Tav: JORDAN PITT
Gareth: ADRIAN PLUMMER

Although there are sufficient lights at the venue, there was not enough time for the them to be moved between each performance of the Write Side festival, so each group had to work off the same basic grid. Each group were only permitted tech rehearsals of between one and three hours due to a two day get-in period, thus lighting cues had to be kept to a minimum, whilst still avoiding blackouts (a pet peeve of Hugh's). Ironically, due to the necessity of a basic set, the lights were needed for defining the location of each scene.

A second re-write was then needed, so as to accommodate all the lighting issues; The final draft of the script can be seen HERE.
